About This Call
The Sandpoint Arts Commission invites artists to apply for the Silver Box Project, an art on loan competition. Three sculptures will be selected by jury process for a one-year loan from October 2017 to August 2018. The project culminates in a community-wide vote to select one sculpture for the City of Sandpoint to purchase. Participation implies the winning artist is satisfied to sell their sculpture to the city for no more than $5,000, including taxes.
The artwork will be located on a highly visible, heavily trafficked pathway near the entrance to Sandpoint City Beach and will be promoted to residents through print and social media as well as highlighted in community arts and culture events. Sculptures will be selected based on artistic merit, artistic content, maintainability, and suitability for public display. Sculptures must weigh no more than 300 pounds, be structurally safe for public display, and have surfaces that do not degrade environmentally. The footprint must be securely bolted onto a 16" x 16" x 1/4" powder coated steel attachment plate, with projections not exceeding 36" at maximum width.
Eligibility is open to residents of Idaho, Montana, Washington, and Oregon. Selection panelists and their immediate family members are not eligible. Applications must include 3-5 images of the work and a description including medium, dimensions, weight, title, date of construction, cleaning and maintenance instructions, and sale price. Selected artists receive $500 for provision, installation, and removal. The winning artist receives $5,000 at which point the City takes ownership. No application fee. Maximum of 3 submissions per artist.
