About This Call
The City of West Palm Beach invites professional artists to apply to design, fabricate, and install two original, site-responsive public artworks for the east and west entry points to the NorthwoodHills Historic District neighborhood. The artworks will be located within the median on 36th Street between Windsor Avenue and Greenwood Avenue. The proposed artworks should reflect the character of the neighborhood, including its history, character, and cultural heritage, and will serve as a unique identifier to the neighborhood.
The artwork site is not accessible to pedestrians and must be fully contained within the designated median area. The design must incorporate an appropriate supporting base/pedestal and plans for landscaping and/or lighting as part of the design and fabrication budget. Electrical power is available on site; water is not. The Engineering Department has final approval authority and will consider Florida Building Code, wind loading, foundation requirements, and electrical and lighting requirements. The total project budget is $200,000, all-inclusive for design development, community outreach, fabrication, installation, artist fee, travel, and other costs. Artists must develop designs compliant with all codes including the Americans with Disabilities Act, conduct three community meetings within a 15-day timeframe, provide bi-monthly updates, and develop a maintenance plan.
Eligibility is open to professional artists over 18 who are USA residents with experience in public art projects. Organizations, architectural and engineering firms, design firms, galleries, and public art consultants are not eligible. Applications must include an artist statement of interest, professional resume (maximum two pages per team member), 10 digital images of relevant past work in .jpeg format at 72 DPI under 2MB file size, and an annotated image list. The application deadline is January 31, 2019. Selection will be made by the Art in Public Places Committee at a public meeting, with final approval contingent upon City Commission approval. The anticipated project schedule includes final selection in March 2019, contract in April 2019, community meetings in April/May 2019, and work completion TBD 2019.
