About This Call

Denver Arts & Venues Public Art Program seeks to commission an artist or team of artists to create an original work of art for the redevelopment of Shoemaker Plaza in Confluence Park, located at 2200 15th Street at the confluence of the South Platte River and Cherry Creek. The commission amount is approximately $40,000 USD. This project is open to Colorado artists and artist teams working in all media.

Shoemaker Plaza is located at the historic birthplace of Denver. The plaza redesign will remove existing ramps and replace them with a single ADA-compliant ramp, new steps for pedestrian access, a mid-level overlook plaza with a vista bar and shade structure, and a covered bicycle shelter. The selection panel seeks site-specific artwork integrated into the plaza and new amenities. Land-based artworks that are kinetic, interactive, or serve multiple functions are encouraged. All materials should emphasize the history and location of the site. Artists must consider long-term conservation, maintenance, durability, and weather resistance. All work must comply with city standards and ADA requirements.

Applicants must submit eight digital images, a résumé, and a statement of interest (no longer than 2,000 characters) via www.callforentry.org. The selection panel will choose up to three semifinalists for interviews. Semifinalists selected to submit formal proposals will receive a $500 honorarium. Semifinalists must submit a Diversity & Inclusiveness Form. The budget of $40,000 is inclusive of all costs: design fee, consultation fees, insurance, materials, fabrication, transportation, installation, travel, and contingency. Prevailing wage requirements apply to all work on city property. Emerging artists who have not completed a permanent public art commission for more than $10,000 are encouraged to apply. Teams may apply; submit one résumé with 1-2 pages per team member. Deadline: January 5, 11:59 PM MDT.
