Shape+Form

Shape+Form is an open juried competition and exhibition hosted by the Sturt Haaga Gallery at Descanso Gardens. The gallery invites artists to submit work exploring how shape and form depict a garden. Works can include other elements, but the subject should focus on botanical components. Special consideration will be given to works that depict Descanso Gardens.

Eligibility is national. Artists may submit up to 5 original artworks in all media, styles, and techniques. Work samples can include images (up to 10), audio (up to 5), and video (up to 5), with a minimum of 2 total samples required. The entry fee is $50 for one or two artworks, with an additional $10 media fee for each entry over 2. Descanso Gardens members receive a discounted entry fee of $35 with a discount code from [email protected]. All work must be original, designed, and created by the applicant and ready for exhibition. Only works not previously exhibited in the Sturt Haaga Gallery are eligible.

Size limits are 24" x 36" x 6" (depth) for 2D and low-relief works, and 24" x 24" x 12" (height) for 3D work. 2D works must be mounted and arrive with traditional hanging hardware in place. Video or digital work must be accompanied by a suitable wall-mountable monitor. Sound may be experienced only with headphones. All artworks must remain on display for the duration of the exhibition (October 28, 2023 – January 28, 2024). Artists are responsible for transportation of artwork to and from the gallery. All artwork must have a sale price or be marked NSF (not for sale) with an insurance value. The jury process occurs September 6-10, 2023, with artist notification on September 13. Artwork drop-off is October 11 and 14, 2023. The opening reception and awards presentation is October 27, 2023. Art pick-up is available January 31 or February 3, 2024, from 12:00 to 4:00 pm.
