About This Call

The City of Winter Park is issuing a Request for Proposals (RFP) for a historical piece of public art as part of Shady Park enhancements. The artwork will be located in the center of Shady Park, centrally located in Winter Park's historical Hannibal Square. The historical art piece will be a core addition to the park's performing arts area, designed to showcase Winter Park's diverse history through African American symbols and mosaics. These historical markers will serve to educate and empower the community through visual art and accurate historic presentation.

The proposal must be for an original sculpture piece featuring four notable African American pioneers in Winter Park history: Mary Lee Depugh, Gus Henderson, Frank R. Israel, and Walter B. Simpson. The scope of work should showcase these four pioneers as busts on a shared base. The piece shall be no taller than six feet six inches. The artwork must be appropriate for permanent exhibition in the outdoor public realm, durable for Florida's harsh environment, and safe for public interaction. Artists or firms must demonstrate experience designing, fabricating, and delivering sculpture in outdoor settings, as well as the ability to work effectively with municipal or governmental entities.

The designated location is within the northern portion of Shady Park, surrounded by updated green space along with elevated landscape, hardscape and site amenity improvements. Proposals must include a cover letter, respondent's experience with public art for governmental entities, qualifications of project staff, a detailed work plan with timeline and 1-5 illustrations/sketches showing dimensions, site plan, materials, colors, theme, lighting requirements, estimated installation and maintenance requirements, professional contacts, and required forms. Submissions must include one original clearly marked, three copies, and one electronic copy on USB Flash Drive. All proposals are to be submitted on 8½ x 11-inch paper, bound individually. The project is open to all artists, artist teams, and architects.
