About This Call
California Art League presents "Shadows," a live exhibition at TAG Gallery (The Artists Gallery, 5458 Wilshire Blvd, Los Angeles, CA 90036) running March 25 to April 16, 2026. The exhibition will also be displayed online at www.californiaartleague.org indefinitely.
The theme is "Shadows." The prospectus states: "Shadows. There are none, without Light. Shadows tell of the unseen, yet of things that exist. Show us the Unseen-But-Known: the suspense that builds, the lazy, languid afternoon in long shadow, the shadow-self, veiled, or revealed to us; the secrets that await. Show us, our selves." The juror is Shana Nys Dambrot, an art critic, curator, and author based in Downtown LA, former Arts Editor at L.A. Weekly, and recipient of the Rabkin Art Writers Prize and LA Press Club Critic of the Year award.
Artwork submissions can be in any medium: drawing, painting, photographs, digital art, mixed media, collage, and sculpture. No performance art or AI-generated work is accepted. All artwork must be original, created entirely by the artist, and not previously shown in any CAL show. Artwork must be for sale and cannot be sold elsewhere for 30 days past the end of the exhibition. Artists are limited to six original artworks per entry. There is a 30" maximum frame width for all wall art. Entry fees are $35 for CAL members with current 2026 dues and $55 for non-CAL members (the $20 surcharge includes discounted CAL membership). Additional entries are $5 per piece. Entries are submitted as JPEG images via Online Juried Shows. Images must be under 4 MB in sRGB colorspace, at least 1920 pixels on the longest side at 72 dpi.
Awards include Best of Show ($800), First Place ($500), Second Place ($200), Third Place ($100), three Honorable Mentions, and The Theodore Herman Award for Photography. Acceptance is based exclusively on digital images submitted during entry. The opening reception and award presentation is March 28, 2026, 5-8 pm. An Artists Talk & Reception is scheduled for April 12, 1-3 pm. Artwork dropoff is March 18-22, 1-6 pm. Pickup is April 17, 3-6 pm and April 18-19, 1-6 pm. Notification of acceptance is March 14, 2026.
