About This Call

Blue is known to be the most popular color globally. It is favored for its calming qualities
that we relate to on a daily basis though the sea and sky. Blue also can be used as a
metaphor for our emotional state of mind; coming in a variety of shades, each can affect
our perception and psychological responses uniquely. In Ancient Egypt this color was
highly regarded and incorporated into clothing and art to reflect their social and cultural
values. In the Middle Ages blue was associated with wealth and power, as deep indigo
dyes were created through an expensive process sourced from the semi-precious Lapis
stone. Ultramarine was developed during the Renaissance period by combining the
bright minerals from Egyptian knowledge and other ingredients to create what became
known as ‘True Blue’ - the most expensive of all pigments.
WAA has invited an extraordinarily multi-talented artist, Karen Dolmanisth to be our juror
for this exhibition; she works with the many elements in nature and often incorporates
blue into her paintings, installations and ceramics. The theme and media are open for
interpretation. In a month more often associated with reds, WAA looks forward to
celebrating all Shades of Blue in February of 2026.
We will be presenting a professionally curated exhibition and additionally, listing all
