Session 2026 | ArtConnect

Session provides artists a 1200sf workspace in Clinton Hill, Brooklyn and 6-10 weeks to develop a new inquiry-based project meant to push the boundaries of their practice. Artists receive an artist honorarium, planning meeting fees, project expenses, technical support, and mentorship collectively valued at approximately $22,500-$25,000. Throughout the session, Recess will facilitate public interactions with the Recess community, as well as connections among intentional communities as identified by each artist.

For the 2026-27 season, 5 Session artists will be selected. In addition, Recess will maintain relationships with a small cohort of applicants to further develop their proposals toward the 2027-28 season. All Session artists are expected to engage with Recess's Assembly program, which offers system-impacted young people aged 18-26 an inroad to art and connections to working artists. For this open call, 1-2 artists/year will be selected to spend four sessions in the months prior to the start of their Session project as teaching artists, sharing insights from their own personal and professional journey. This engagement will begin with a day-long retreat and can include both onsite workshops and offsite experiences. Session X Assembly artists receive an additional $1200 honorarium for individuals and $1500 for multiple artists/collectives, along with additional funds as needed for approved materials, transportation, and hospitality costs.

Artists receive a fixed honorarium of $3500 for individuals and $5000 for multiple artists/collaboratives upon successful deinstallation. Artists also receive up to $2500 for individuals and $4000 for multiple artists/collaboratives for required pre-Session planning meetings and post-Session debrief, a project expenses budget of up to $10k, and $2500 for individuals and $4000 for multiple artists/collaboratives designated for a Care & Capacity Fund. Session is not a traditional residency program providing "time away" to produce work, nor is it an exhibition opportunity to present fully realized artworks. Non-US citizens must have either US residency status with a valid Social Security number or a valid work visa running through at least the end of the residency period. There is no application fee, participation fee, or additional fees.
