About This Call

The Public Art Committee of Johnson City, Tennessee is seeking qualifications from artists or art teams for the commission of a sculpture to commemorate the City's sesquicentennial and celebrate the City's future evolution. This opportunity is open to all professional artists over the age of 18 with previous public sculpture experience.

The sesquicentennial sculpture will be installed in King Commons park in downtown Johnson City. The sculpture's radius must not exceed 7 feet. It must be lit at night or have light elements incorporated into the design, and it is preferred (but not required) that the sculpture is lit from within. The sculpture should be substantial, durable, and long-lasting with limited or no moving parts and no fragile components. It should be resistant to vandalism and highly visible during day and night. The design should provide an interpretation of Johnson City's future possibilities and convey a sense of growth, change, hope, happiness, and excitement. Abstract or more literal interpretations of the theme "Hopes for the Future of Johnson City" will be considered.

Up to three finalists will be selected to develop concept proposals. Each finalist will receive a $1,000 stipend for their proposal. The selected artist or art team will be paid up to $147,000 for the commissioned work. The total project budget does not exceed $150,000. The selected artist or art team is responsible for travel costs, materials, housing, and personal liability insurance. Finalists will be required to present their work to the Selection Committee and will be reimbursed for travel costs and hotel accommodations. The selected artist will be responsible for design, fabrication, and installation, coordinating with the City of Johnson City Public Works Department. City crews will provide ongoing maintenance and cleaning. Submissions must include a cover letter, digital portfolio of 10 images of previous artwork with project budget amounts and descriptions for each image. Selection will be based on artistic excellence, experience in design and installation of similar projects, experience working in community settings, willingness to meet contractual guidelines, and use of content appropriate for all audiences.
