About This Call

Denver Botanic Gardens seeks artists to create a public art commission for the Sensory Garden, a fully accessible garden designed to engage all five senses for people of all ages and abilities. The garden features adaptive gardening techniques and structures that minimize barriers and maximize accessibility. Dedicated in honor of the 20th anniversary of the ADA and Denver's disabled community, the space provides learning opportunities and respite for cancer survivors, individuals with autism or Alzheimer's, and those with sensory processing disorders.

Artworks that are tactile, have a calming auditory component, or serve multiple functions and engage the senses will enhance the garden experience. Interactive projects and those incorporating water features are encouraged. All media and materials are welcome. Artists must be mindful of the garden's functionality and its users. All public art projects must be fabricated of highly durable, low-maintenance materials suitable for outdoor exposure and subject to weather, physical stresses, and potential vandalism. Semifinalists are encouraged to consult with a professional conservator prior to final proposal submission.

This project is open to Colorado artists who currently live and work in the state. Emerging artists are encouraged to apply. Applicants must submit six digital images, a résumé, and a statement of interest (no longer than 2,000 characters) via www.callforentry.org. Single artists and multi-person collaborative teams may apply. The selection panel will choose up to three semifinalists for interviews; semifinalists receive a $500 honorarium to prepare and present proposals in person. The selected artist or team will receive a $45,000 commission budget, inclusive of all project costs including design, consultation, materials, fabrication, installation, and prevailing wage requirements. Prevailing wage requirements apply to all work on city property.
