Selfhood

Selfhood is a juried exhibition held at Strata Gallery in Santa Fe, New Mexico, running from January 2-19, 2024. The exhibition features artworks centered upon the concept of selfhood, considering how selfhood is constructed, altered, and reimagined. Contemporary artists investigate the multiplicitous nature of selfhood: gender, sexual orientation, race, class, age, ethnicity, and so forth. Artworks may consider selfhood outside traditional Western views of self, as a dichotomy reflecting cultural norms and sources of resistance to them. Artists may present visualizations of selfhood exploring self-discovery, self-definition, and self-direction, particularly during disruptive times. Any artist whose artwork examines concepts of selfhood in contemporary times is encouraged to apply.

Prizes include $200 for Best of Show (1 award) and $100 for Honorable Mention (2 awards). The juror is Rosemary Meza-DesPlas, a 2022 Latinx Artist Fellowship recipient and multidisciplinary artist. Selection criteria include compliance with submission requirements, uniqueness and originality, visual impact, and demonstrated excellence of technique.

Submission requirements: Submit 3-6 images in .jpg format with annotations including artist name, artwork title, date of completion, medium, dimensions in inches (height x width x depth), and price. All artwork must be ready to hang/display with proper hardware. Media accepted: painting, drawing, sculpture, printmaking, photography, mixed media. Wall-mounted work maximum size is 40x40 inches (12 inches deep for wall-mounted sculpture). Maximum weight: 25 lbs. Submitted work must remain available for the duration of the exhibition. Entry fee: $35 for first three submissions, $10 per additional submission (maximum of three additional submissions, 6 total maximum). Media fee: $10. Payment by card and PayPal only. Notification date: November 26, 2023. Loan agreement deadline: December 2, 2023. Hand-delivered artwork must arrive by December 9, 2023 by 2pm; shipped artwork by end of day December 9, 2023. Reception: January 5, 2024, 5-7pm. Pickup of hand-delivered artwork: January 20, 2024, 11am-1pm. Shipped artworks returned to artists week of January 20, 2024. Each artist handles sale and shipping of sold artwork. Strata Gallery collects buyer contact information and provides it to the artist. All sold artwork is subject to 20% commission due to Strata Gallery.
