About This Call

Sanchez Art Center seeks to commission an artist or artist team to create visual and interdisciplinary art installations and interactive experiences that invite the community to reflect on sea level rise and adaptation strategies. The project aims to prompt discussion of public sentiment and values, and foster community connection enabling positive forward motion on strategies and plans that meet shared needs.

Three project sites spanning different risk areas across the City of Pacifica will be planned: north with eroding cliffs threatening housing and city infrastructure; central where rock revetments have historically been used to protect infrastructure and private property from wave inundation and overtopping; and south prone to flooding. Project proposals should encourage authentic and civil conversation that raises awareness and understanding, incorporate youth voices, engage a broad and diverse spectrum of community members including socially vulnerable populations, and promote waste reduction as an integral component. There are no limitations on form and may include all forms of visual art, auditory, sensory, and multi-disciplinary interventions, participatory projects, and interactive installations. Materials used must convey a message of waste reduction; 3D art must reflect a minimum of 75% made or constructed from recyclable or trash materials.

The selected artist or artist team will receive a $7,500 stipend (paid 50% at initiation, 30% midway, and 20% after completion). Monetary reimbursement for art and community engagement activity materials up to $2,500 will be available, and additional in-kind funding for materials up to $2,500 will also be available. The $10,000 monetary budget is inclusive of all artist fees, stipend, time, fabrication, installation, transportation, de-installation, and all other project-related expenses. Sanchez Art Center staff will coordinate permits, insurance, event logistics, and volunteers. Submission deadline is July 9, 2019 at 11:59 p.m. PDT. Selected artist or artist team will be announced July 26, 2019. Project creation and civic engagement activities will occur August 12, 2019 through February 21, 2020.
