About This Call

Seattle University Visual Artist In Residence 2014 (SUVAIR 2014) is a six-month residency beginning July 1, 2014 and ending January 10, 2015. The program is designed to facilitate research and support for artists in their creative process, providing a unique environment for artists and students to develop new ideas. The residency offers artists valuable resources of time and space for open-ended investigation, experimentation, and collaboration. While no formal exhibition is required at the end of the residency, selected artists are encouraged to use the ~1500+ sq ft exhibition space as a teaching, process, or exhibition tool.

The residency is housed within the Seattle University campus in the Capitol Hill neighborhood, with access to the university library and facilities. The residency studio and offices are located in two recently renovated buildings that once housed a streetcar turn-house. The program creates a forum for dialogue between the public and the artist in residence through artist talks, a projects studio, open studio time, and other forms of public programming.

Selected Artist Benefits include access to Seattle University campus, libraries, and sports facilities; an individual studio space (Hunthausen Studio, ~750 sq ft); devoted exhibition space in Vachon Gallery during fall 2014; and a stipend of $3000. Selected artists are expected to give at least one public lecture or slide presentation, maintain open studio hours during fall 2014, and present an exhibition, work-in-progress presentation, or programming in Vachon Gallery during winter 2015. Applications must include a resume or curriculum vitae, letter of interest outlining your specific interest in working at Seattle University and how the residency will affect your practice, and documentation of recent work. Work sample requirements: minimum 10 images, maximum 20 images; audio and video are optional (0-6 each). Artist collaboratives should submit one application per group. Seattle University seeks applications from artists and arts professionals working in all media and actively seeks applicants from all backgrounds.
