About This Call
The Seattle Department of Transportation (SDOT) is seeking a professional artist to develop and integrate artwork into city sidewalks at up to three locations throughout Seattle. The selected artist will work with SDOT representatives and the Office of Arts & Cultural Affairs to create artwork for sidewalk repair projects in select neighborhoods, with priority given to neighborhood business districts, public-school walking routes, and active pedestrian zones. The artist will be required to participate in community-involvement events during the design phase.
One artist will be chosen for this project. The total design and fabrication commission is $30,000 (inclusive of all costs and taxes). Artworks created for this project are semi-permanent, with an expected use of six to eight years. Design considerations include ensuring that sidewalk artwork is durable, slip resistant, free of trip hazards, and complies with ADA and SDOT requirements.
Eligibility is open to professional artists residing in Washington. Students are not eligible. Selection will be based on artistic merit and quality in concept, design, and craftsmanship of past works; the ability to produce durable outdoor art; proven ability to collaborate in design teams with design professionals and community stakeholders; and demonstrated ability to complete projects on time and within budget. The selection process includes two rounds: a panel review of applicants' images and qualifications, followed by interviews with up to four finalists. Applicants will be notified of the panel's decision by email in May 2008. Contact Jason Huff, public art project manager, at 206-684-7278 or [email protected] with questions.
