About This Call
The Town of Avon, Colorado requests proposals from mural artists or artist teams to create an original mural for the west-facing exterior stucco wall of the Seasons at Avon building located at the corner of W. Benchmark Road and Mikaela Way. This project is sponsored by the Avon Town Council and Cultural, Arts & Special Events (CASE) Committee.
The Seasons Mural will establish a creative identity for the east end of Harry A. Nottingham Park and serve as a significant landmark visually connecting Avon's Library, Recreation Center, and Civic Center. The design should celebrate the community's rich tapestry, weaving together elements of history, education, discovery, and mountain lifestyle. Themes may include: scenes of ranch life and agricultural heritage with traditional farming tools, livestock, and historical sites such as the Metcalf Cabin and Nottingham Ranch; colorful patterns and motifs inspired by Latino traditions, including vibrant textiles, festive dances, and symbols of books and learning; the natural beauty of the Eagle River, native wildlife, and plant/floral life; or learning opportunities in natural and built environments such as Walking Mountains Science Center and Avon Library. The design should use a bright and cheerful color palette with whimsical, illustrative style to engage viewers of all ages. The design should not be landscape mountain scenery nor demonstratively urban.
The selected artist will be paid up to $22,000.00 and is responsible for working with Town representatives on all aspects including multiple design iterations. The project budget is all-inclusive and must cover up to three curated design concepts, design fees, commercial liability insurance, all materials and installation costs including transportation, lodging, and meals. The Town will clean the site prior to installation and provide a boom lift and/or scissors lift for no more than 30 consecutive days. The wall measures approximately 30' tall x 70' wide (2,100 sq ft) plus a concrete wall measuring 2' tall x 70' wide (140 sq ft). The wall contains four windows arranged in two clusters (approximately 4' tall x 7' wide each) that must remain paint-free, utilities infrastructure on the north end, and two roof drainage spouts that require protection.
Eligibility is open to artists and artist teams residing and working in Colorado who are 18 years or older with necessary documentation to work in the United States. Applicants must complete work before July 31, 2025 and provide a statement regarding conflicts of interest and any litigation in the past five years. Applications must include artist contact information, a project statement describing approach and intention, and a portfolio of 5 to 10 digital images representing at least three relevant mural projects.
