About This Call
The South Dakota Art For State Buildings (AFSB) program was established in 2008 by the South Dakota State Legislature to create a permanent state art collection showcasing South Dakota artists and artwork. The State Art Collection is displayed in publicly accessible areas of state government buildings located throughout Pierre, SD. The South Dakota Arts Council (SDAC) manages the collection and accepts proposals on an annual basis.
Eligible artists must be age 18 or older and currently reside in South Dakota, or have had South Dakota as their primary residence during the majority of their art career. Artists may submit a maximum of two original artworks. Eligible artwork includes all visual art processes in two-dimensional (including photography) or three-dimensional (including sculpture) formats. Artwork must be original (not reproductions), completed and available for purchase, and ready for display at the time of submission. High-resolution digital JPG images must be provided for each piece.
Proposals must include: a bio or resume with current contact information and documentation of artistic experience; an artist statement describing what inspires you and the artwork submitted; one digital image of each piece; and information about each artwork including title, medium, dimensions (including frame/base/pedestal), purchase price, and date of completion. Selection is based on artwork quality, relevance to South Dakota's environment/history/heritage/culture, artist's professional arts experience, and physical attributes including material permanence and safety in a public setting. The Selection Committee will review proposals and may divide the $20,000 budget among any number of artworks. Deadline for delivery of selected artwork to the SDAC office in Pierre is June 2, 2023.
