SDAC 2022 Art For State Buildings Program

The South Dakota Arts Council (SDAC) invites artists to submit proposals for the Art For State Buildings (AFSB) Program. Artwork selected for purchase is based on the quality of the artwork, its relevance to South Dakota's environment, history, heritage, or culture, the applicant's professional arts experience, and the physical attributes of the artwork in terms of permanence of materials and safety in a public setting.

Eligible artists must currently reside in South Dakota or have had South Dakota as their primary residence during the majority of their art career. Artists whose artwork has not previously been purchased through the AFSB program will be given priority in the selection process. Applicants must submit a bio or résumé including current contact information and evidence of artistic experience; an artist statement; and up to 10 high-resolution digital JPG images of completed artwork (from approximately the last five years). For each artwork submitted, provide the title, medium, dimensions, purchase price (or "Not For Sale"), date of completion, and any other pertinent information.

Applications are reviewed annually by a five-member AFSB Selection Committee consisting of a state building architect or representative, SDAC-appointed state building representative, SDAC-appointed visual arts professional, SDAC board member with visual arts expertise, and a mayor-appointed community resident of Pierre, SD with visual arts expertise. The selection committee will make recommendations on purchases and may divide the $20,000 budget in any proportion and for any number of artworks. Notification of acceptance or rejection will be sent by email on April 18, 2022. Selected artists must deliver or ship original artwork to the SDAC office in Pierre, SD by May 13, 2022.
