About This Call

Artists are invited to submit work—existing or conceptual—for the fifth annual Sculpture on the Lawn exhibition, an outdoor display featured at the entrance to the Orange County Administration Center (201 S. Rosalind Ave.) in downtown Orlando, Florida. The works are visible to approximately 10,000 people daily. Up to four sculptures will be selected for display from October 2020 to September 2021. One sculpture will be selected from a student or emerging artist, if suitable. The exhibition is open to experienced professional sculptors as well as students and emerging artists who specialize in the design, construction and installation of outdoor sculptures.

Submissions must include a minimum of 1 image and maximum of 6 images (finished works or conceptual drawings). If the proposed project is not a finished work, artists must provide information to assure the Selection Panel of what it will look like and that it will be completed and installed as designed by October 1, 2020. Selection criteria are creativity, site appropriateness, and durability. Works will be reviewed for durability, safety, and appropriateness to the site. Artworks must be structurally sound and able to withstand an outdoor environment in a subtropical climate with hot, humid conditions, intense sun, seasonal heavy rains, and hurricane-force winds. Orange County provides 12-by-12-foot concrete pads, and sculptures must be firmly secured to the pads. There is a 6-foot minimum height preference with no maximum height limit.

Selected artists will receive a $3,500 honorarium as a fee for the annual loan of artwork and to help offset transportation, installation, and housing costs. A payment of $3,000 will be made upon installation and processing of required paperwork, and $500 will be paid upon removal and processing of required paperwork. Orange County will insure the artwork up to its stated value or $50,000, whichever is less, for theft or major vandalism. The artist is responsible for repairs due to fabrication defects or reasonable wear and tear. Selected artists must transport the artwork to the site and install it with minimal assistance, then remove it after the exhibition. Sales of works will be encouraged and promoted, with no commission charged. The application deadline is Monday, June 22, 2020. Notification of acceptance will be sent Wednesday, July 1, 2020. Installation will occur October 1-12, 2020, with an opening celebration on October 19, 2020, at 5:30-6:30 p.m. Sculpture removal is scheduled for October 1-11, 2021. For further information, contact Terry Olson, Director, Arts & Cultural Affairs, at [email protected] or 407-836-5540.
