About This Call

Artists are invited to submit work—existing or conceptual—for the fourth annual Sculpture on the Lawn exhibition, an outdoor display at the entrance to the Orange County Administration Center (201 S. Rosalind Ave.) in downtown Orlando, Florida. The works are visible to approximately 10,000 people daily. The exhibition is open to experienced professional sculptors as well as students and emerging artists who specialize in the design, construction and installation of outdoor sculptures. Up to four sculptures will be selected for display from October 2018 to September 2019, with one sculpture selected from a student or emerging artist if suitable.

This year's theme is "Diversitastic!" celebrating diversity in communities and the interweaving of different backgrounds, cultures and religions. The theme supports FusionFest, a free two-day celebration in downtown Orlando on November 24 & 25, supported by Orange County Government. Selection criteria focus on creativity, site appropriateness and durability. Images of finished works and conceptual drawings can be submitted. If the proposed project is not a finished work, artists must provide information to assure the Selection Panel of what it will look like and that it will be completed and installed as designed.

Selected artists must transport and install the artwork on the specified date with minimal assistance, then remove it after the exhibition. Orange County provides 12-by-12-foot concrete pads, and sculptures must be firmly secured to the pads. Artworks must be structurally sound and able to withstand an outdoor subtropical environment with hot, humid weather, intense sun, seasonal heavy rains and hurricane-force winds. There is a 6-foot minimum height preference with no maximum height limit. Each artist will receive a $3,500 honorarium ($3,000 upon installation and $500 upon removal) to help offset transportation, installation and housing costs. Orange County will insure artwork up to its stated value or $50,000, whichever is less, for theft or major vandalism. The artist is responsible for repairs due to fabrication defects or reasonable wear and tear. Sales of works will be encouraged and promoted with no commission charged. The opening reception is October 19, 2018, 5:30-7:30 p.m. Contact Terry Olson at [email protected] or 407-836-5540 with questions.
