About This Call
Sculpture NOW 2011 will provide a compelling view into the state of sculpture today, addressing a broad range of sculptural practices and attempting to make sense of traditional and new materials, forms, methods, and concerns of artists working in the region. The exhibition will be juried by Tom Ashcraft, visual artist and Associate Professor and Head of Sculpture at the School of Art, George Mason University.
The exhibition takes place at Artery Plaza Gallery, 7200 Wisconsin Avenue, Bethesda, MD 20814, from November 9 – December 16, 2011. Accepted work will be juried from digital images and media. WSG will award the Sculpture NOW "Tom Rooney Prize" of $500 at the Artists' Reception on Friday, November 11, 2011.
Eligible work includes three-dimensional freestanding sculpture, wall-hung sculpture, ceiling-hung sculpture under 30 lbs., installations, and new media. The gallery has 12 ft. high ceilings and a 108" x 75" W x 55" D freight elevator with a 94" h x 42" w door. No pedestals or audio/visual equipment will be provided. All accepted work must remain on display for the full duration of the show. Artists must commit to one 6-hour gallery sitting shift during the exhibition. Artists are solely responsible for delivery, installation, and de-installation of their work; staff will be available onsite to assist. The gallery will not receive shipments of artwork.
Entry fee is $45. Current WSG members are exempt from the fee. Artists not already members may join by paying annual dues of $45 ($15 for full-time students). Submissions must be made through the CaFÉ website by September 5, 2011 at midnight MDT. Artists may enter 1-2 sculptural works with up to 4 images total, or 1-2 video/new media works with up to 2 videos total (maximum file size 100 MB). Notification of accepted artists will be completed by September 26, 2011. Installation is November 5, 2011 (10 am - 2 pm). Pick-up is December 17, 2011 (10 am - 2 pm). WSG will insure work while on site, not during transportation. No commission will be taken on sales.
