About This Call
The Cape Coral Community Redevelopment Agency seeks to commission an artist or artist team to create a site-specific sculpture for a roundabout in South Cape. The sculpture will serve as a landmark and marker in the cultural history of the city, creating visual interest for the enhanced streetscape and pedestrian pathways while furthering Cape Coral's identity and sense of place.
The sculpture at the base must not exceed 5 feet in diameter and 10 feet in height, with room to extend beyond the 5-foot diameter in the middle or toward the top. The work must be original, preferably relatable to Cape Coral or South Cape, and must withstand tropical elements including intense sunlight, excess rainfall, hurricanes, cyclones, and high summer temperatures. The sculpture must not include moving parts or interactive features that encourage climbing or play. Electricity is available at the roundabout on two 20 Amp/120 Volt circuits.
The total budget is $45,000, covering all costs including materials, fabrication, installation, permitting, documentation, and transportation. Up to three finalists will receive a $500 design fee to develop a maquette or proposal. Eligible artists must be 18 years or older and residing in the United States, and must meet at least two of the following criteria: completed other public art commissions of similar scale, received awards/grants/fellowships, had works in major private/corporate/museum collections, or had at least one solo exhibition at an American Associations of Museums accredited institution within the past five years. Submissions must include a letter of intent, current resume or CV with contact information, three to five images of prior completed projects with descriptions including dimensions, budget, materials, and location. Three finalists will be selected to present proposals in person or virtually, including a prefabrication review identifying materials, expected longevity, fabrication techniques, installation methods, and long-term maintenance strategies. The CRA board will select the winning design based on proposal merits, material suitability, and artist credentials.
