About This Call
Logan Circle Community Association, in partnership with Logan Circle Main Streets and the developers of LIZ (Whitman-Walker and Five Squares Development), is seeking an artist experienced in designing and fabricating large-scale outdoor public art to create a sculpture for installation on a plinth at the southeast corner of 14th and R Streets, NW, outside of LIZ in the Logan Circle neighborhood of Washington, DC. The project is contingent on receiving grant funding.
The sculpture will be installed on an 8-foot square plinth with a height range of 8–20 feet. The artwork must be highly durable, sustainable, and low maintenance, demonstrating UV protection, sustained structural and surface soundness, and resistance to vandalism and weathering. The sculpture must be fire resistant. Water features are not allowed, but lighting components will be considered. The design should be site responsive, create an iconic and vibrant element on 14th Street, engage the public, promote communal activities, and foster an emotional connection reflective of the neighborhood's history and cultures.
The selection process unfolds in two phases. Phase One requires submission of artist contact information, resume, initial concept sketch with brief written description, 5–10 high-quality JPG images of previous relevant artwork, image identification list, and professional references (three contacts with names, addresses, phone numbers, and emails). Artists must also certify general liability insurance. The review panel will score applications based on skills and experience, artistic content, design originality and sensitivity to site, community connection, and local preference (DC-based artists given preference for identical scores). Up to three finalists will be selected and receive a $500 stipend to develop their concepts further. Phase Two finalists must submit a minimum of three detailed renderings, proposed budget (artist fee, supplies, labor, installation costs), timeline including all project steps and installation, and a maquette. Finalists may be invited to present concepts to local organizations.
Eligibility is restricted to artists living and working in the District of Columbia, Maryland, and Virginia within approximately 50 miles of the District. Artists must have experience in sculptural design and/or fabrication. DC-based artists are especially encouraged to apply. Jury dates: 3/7/23–3/20/23. Total project budget: $150,000.
