About This Call
The Leesburg Center for the Arts, in partnership with the City of Leesburg, is commissioning new public art to screen four Lift Stations from public view while providing aesthetically pleasing streetscape elements. The total project budget is $28,000. The selected artist or artist team will receive $28,000 to cover design, transportation, lodging, fabrication, materials, labor, installation, insurance, and all other costs associated with the artwork through final installation. Payment will be made half as a deposit after contract execution and half after satisfactory completion.
The artwork should be unique, engaging, reflective of community-preselected themes, and not easily scaled. The screening panels are free-standing and will be placed in front of four separate Lift Stations at varying sizes: Shore #9 (25' L x 8' H with 11' L x 8' H gate opening), Center #11 (30' L x 8' H), Park #29 (13' L x 8' H), and Citrus #37 (22' L x 8' H). Three panels will be placed in front of existing chain link fence enclosures; one will be stand-alone. Design openings must limit entrapment by restricting openings or perforations to less than 3.5" in diameter. Materials must withstand high traffic public environments and Florida's adverse weather conditions including high UV exposure, humidity, temperatures, heavy rain, storms, and high winds. Materials must also withstand washing and maintenance for graffiti removal.
This call is open to professional artists with qualifications and experience in their medium and with projects of this scale and complexity. Emerging artists are encouraged to apply and must demonstrate the ability to complete a project of this scope. Three finalists will be shortlisted and compensated $350 for conceptual designs. The selection panel comprises commission organization representatives, community representatives, and artists. Application deadline: August 6, 2021. Anticipated shortlist notification: week of August 23, 2021. Anticipated conceptual design presentations: week of September 20, 2021. Installation anticipated to begin: December 2021/January 2022. Applicants must submit 5 images of previous work. The selected artist/artist team must contract with the Leesburg Center for the Arts and add the organization to a general liability insurance policy for the duration of the project.
