About This Call
The South Haven Center for the Arts, in partnership with the South Haven Visitor's Bureau, the Downtown Development Authority and the City of South Haven, is seeking proposals for sculptural and functional bike racks that are playful and memorable. Four designs will be selected, and each selected artist will receive a $2,500 honorarium ($1,500 upon acceptance and $1,000 upon completion and delivery).
This is a design and build project requiring artists to deliver one uniquely designed and completed commercial-grade, welded metal bike rack for the City to install. Bike rack designs must accommodate four to six bicycles upright by their frames and enable the frame and one wheel to be secured using a standard u-lock. Locking points must be between 1' and 3' above ground. Racks must intersect with the ground plane securely, provide pedal clearance at the bottom, be non-abrasive to bike frames, and safe for pedestrians and cyclists with no sharp edges. Designs must accommodate most sizes and shapes of bicycle frames and wheels (adult and child). Minimum dimensions are 4' x 3' (w x h) and maximum dimensions are 8' x 8' (w x h). All designs must be original and appropriate for public domain use.
Proposals must be submitted through callforentry.com as jpeg images or .pdf files. Artists may submit a maximum of 4 designs (hand-drawn or computer-prepared, to scale with dimensions and thickness included). Submissions must include a resume and 3-5 examples of previous work demonstrating capability to complete the project, plus a short bio of 200 words or less. Completed bike racks must be delivered to the City of South Haven Public Works by May 18, 2022. Artists must be able to produce and deliver the rack to South Haven, Michigan within the specified timeframe. Artist notification is January 14, 2022.
