About This Call
Scottsdale Public Art is accepting qualifications from artists for a public art opportunity at George "Doc" Cavalliere Park. The selected artist will design enhancements for the existing park and trail system to be fabricated and installed by the artist or by contractors hired by the artist. The project results from a bequest in the name of Frank Crerie, a long-time Scottsdale resident, painter, and friend of public art. The enhancements are intended as a memorial to Mr. Crerie and must include some form of recognition as a plaque or signage mentioning him and his gift to the Scottsdale Public Art Program and the City of Scottsdale, while keeping the Cavalliere Park naming in primary position.
George "Doc" Cavalliere Park opened in February 2012 on 34 acres at 27775 N. Alma School Parkway. It includes a shaded playground, two lighted basketball courts, a ¾-mile loop hiking trail, picnic area, wildflower viewing area, ramadas, restrooms, and two large retention basins set in the high Sonoran Desert landscape. Man-made materials featured in the park consist of Corten steel, concrete, and rusting Gabions filled with river rock. The park was recognized as a Valley Forward Association's Crescordia award winner in the "Site Development and Landscape – Parks" category.
The art for this project should address and creatively reflect the character of the park's Sonoran Desert setting while making use of existing landscape, educational signage, or other possible artistic enhancements to inform the public about the site and honor the memory of Frank Crerie. The budget for the project will not exceed $95,000.00, which includes costs of the artist's time creating the design, fabrication, installation, travel, conference calls/meetings, taxes, insurance, and reimbursable expenses. An artist-selection panel will evaluate submissions based on professional qualifications, proven ability to undertake similar projects, artistic merit, and demonstrated ability to work with government agencies. The chosen artist will be recommended by the selection panel and approved by the Scottsdale Public Art Advisory Board. Eligibility is limited to artists residing in Arizona, California, Colorado, Nevada, New Mexico, and Utah. The deadline for response to the RFQ is September 5, 2013 at midnight MST.
