About This Call
The Scottsdale Public Art Program seeks an artist to create a temporary public artwork for the Scottsdale Arts Festival. This is an ideal opportunity for emerging or experienced artists to develop a piece that engages diverse audiences and complements the festival setting. The selected artwork will receive a budget of $11,000.
The artwork should be appropriately scaled for the festival context and speak to a public audience. There is no predetermined size or theme. The artwork should have strong visual impact, draw viewers to investigate and photograph it, and engage and intrigue people. It may be created on-site as part of the public performance/installation, or exist as a stand-alone installation. All materials must be on site prior to the festival opening if construction occurs during the weekend. Performative elements may involve watching the artwork be created or altered on-site, or feature an actual performance, ritual, or action within the artwork.
The artwork will be located at the Civic Center Mall in downtown Scottsdale during the festival (March 8-10, 2013). Site options include grass areas, paved areas, outdoor walls up to two stories in height, trees, lampposts, fountains, ponds, rooftops, and airspace above the festival grounds. The artwork must withstand outdoor conditions; weather is typically warm and sunny. Applicants should submit a resume (3 pages maximum), 2 references, 5 images of previous work (optional: up to 3 images of existing work being proposed, 8 total images allowed), and a proposal as a single PDF file. The proposal must include a brief narrative describing the concept and materials, an all-inclusive budget not exceeding $11,000 (including 10% contingency, shipping, and travel), an estimated fabrication, installation, and de-installation schedule, proposed location type(s), and drawing(s), rendering(s), and/or images of maquette(s). Selection will be based on responsiveness to artwork objectives and site conditions, professional qualifications, proven ability to undertake similar projects, and artistic merit. The selection panel will make a direct artist selection. Timeline: Proposal deadline January 6, 2013; selection complete by January 11, 2013; artist notification by January 14, 2013; site visit and proposal refinement by January 28, 2013; fabrication and installation January 28-March 7, 2013; de-installation begins March 10, 2013.
