About This Call
The City of Pompano Beach is seeking twelve artists for the second round of the Painted Pompano project. Each selected artist will receive a prefabricated five-foot tall fish sculpture to paint and design. The fish is modeled after the City of Pompano Beach logo and sits on an integrated base approximately 5-6 feet in diameter. The fish is constructed of foam with three coats of polyurethane and will be shop primed flat white.
Artists must select a particular period in art history and create a design inspired by it. Periods include the Renaissance, Baroque, Neoclassical, Romanticism, Realism, Impressionism, Post-Impressionism, Cubism, Dada, Surrealism, Postmodernism, Abstract Expressionism, Classical, and Contemporary. Bright colors are preferred. Artists may submit up to three designs for consideration, but only one design will be selected per artist. The twelve completed fish sculptures will be placed at various locations throughout the City including George Brummer Park, Herb Skolnick Community Center, Hillsboro Inlet Park, Highlands Park, Community Park, the Dog Park, Aldorf Park, Civic Park, McNair Park, Apollo Park, the corner of Copans Road and NE 5th Ave., and the Air Park.
Each selected artist will be provided with workspace by the City to create their fish, or may work at a separate location (with artist responsible for shipping costs). Artists will have one month to complete the sculpture. Each selected artist will be paid $1,500 upon completion and approval of their painted fish. This honorarium must cover all materials for design execution. Designs must be appropriate for public display and cannot be religious, political, or sexual in nature. The structure may not display text, words, alpha-numeric characters, corporate logos, or advertising. Acrylic paint, artificial resin paint, or two-component paint can be used. If painting, a minimum of three coats of varnish using two-part, hard gloss, non-yellowing varnish is required, along with a sealant. Artists will not be required to install the fish but should be available for touch-up work as needed. Selection criteria include design, statement, examples of previous artwork, and materials to be used.
