About This Call
The Schlow Centre Region Library is located at the corner of Allen Street and Beaver Avenue in downtown State College, Pennsylvania. The library serves the borough of State College and surrounding townships that make up the Centre Region. The library annually serves over 350,000 visitors, checks out over 700,000 items, and offers educational programs to over 27,000 attendees. The corner of Beaver Avenue and Allen Street serves as a major transportation hub for the CATABUS system, operated by the Centre Area Transportation Authority (CATA).
The Central Pennsylvania Festival of the Arts is seeking a sculpture to be anchored to the ground in front of the library at one of the busiest street corners in the borough. Applicants must submit a letter of interest (no more than 5000 characters) describing their work, other commissioned work completed, and their vision for the piece; no more than ten digital images of their work; and a current resume. All materials must be submitted online via CallforEntry.org. There is no application fee.
A selection panel will evaluate submissions based on the quality of the artist's work and response to site, considering the importance of a vibrant downtown, the library as a source for self-improvement and discovery, the key role of public transportation, and the ability to bring focus to the site. Three artists will be chosen to produce maquettes and will receive an honorarium of $1,250 (half paid in advance, half on delivery of the maquette due January 2, 2013). The commission will be awarded after evaluation of the maquettes and is worth $36,000 to the selected artist. The panel reserves the right not to award the commission.
