About This Call

The Scientific and Cultural Facilities District (SCFD) seeks to commission an original work of art to be located on the open-air Galleria of the Denver Performing Arts Complex at 14th and Curtis Street in Denver. The artwork could be two-dimensional or three-dimensional and must withstand the test of time, weather, and public viewing and touching. The selected proposal will honor the SCFD and the public whose sales taxes support it, while creating a sense of homage to the legacy of Mr. Rex Morgan and those who have received the annual Rex Morgan Citizen Volunteer Award. The selected artist's proposal must include a clear plan for how new award winners will be added to the artwork each year.

This opportunity is open to Colorado resident artists working in outdoor medium. The artwork should be in a scale suitable to the high-traffic Galleria location with a maximum diameter of 4 feet and maximum height of 8 feet. The artwork should be maintenance free. The expected budget is $50,000, though the final contract amount will be determined by actual fundraising. The contract will be inclusive of all costs including design fee, structural engineering, insurance, materials, fabrication, transportation, installation, and any site modifications required. Submissions will be evaluated on understanding of SCFD and Mr. Morgan's legacy, innovation, compatibility with the installation site, qualifications demonstrated by past work, permanence and durability, probability of successful completion, and public safety. The proposed artwork must include the image of Popsicle, the SCFD mascot, which can be downloaded from www.scfd.org.

Deadline for submittal is September 1, 2009. A guided site visit for applicant artists was held on June 8 at 11:00 a.m. The Theatres & Arenas Division of the City and County of Denver working with the Tribute Selection Committee will have final decision on placement and reserves the right to move the artwork in the future.
