About This Call

The City of Santa Clarita is accepting applications from artists or teams of artists for a permanent artwork commission for a new Sheriff's Station. There is no overarching theme or required medium. The Station and its local community should serve as inspiration.

The new Station is a joint project between the City and the County of Los Angeles, featuring a 45,000 square foot facility with a Type 1 detention facility, 4,000 square foot vehicle maintenance building, and heliport. Located on City-owned property on Golden Valley Road between Centre Pointe Parkway and Robert C. Lee Parkway, construction is scheduled to begin in April 2019, with completion expected by July 2020. Two areas have been identified as potential public art opportunities: the windows and the lobby area inside. Finalists may present proposals for one site or both sites.

Eligibility: Artists 18 years or older with at least one completed public art project with a government agency. Application materials must include a cover letter, resume, description of past works, artist statement, and portfolio of 15-20 images of past work (at least two from previous public art projects with government agencies). Video (maximum three) and audio (maximum two) are accepted. The entry deadline is January 7, 2019. Finalists will be notified by January 22, 2019 and will present February 25-28, 2019. Each finalist receives a $1,000 honorarium. The total budget for the artwork project is $179,876, which must cover all design, fabrication, transportation, installation, insurance, and artist expenses. The selected artist will be responsible for obtaining required engineer drawings, site preparation coordination with City staff, and providing a maintenance guide. The artwork must reach permanency of a minimum of 25 years. Contact: [email protected]
