About This Call
This is an invitation-only opportunity to serve as lead artist and team for the Santa Clara-Alum Rock Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) Project's art and design enhancement program. The project involves creating permanent, impactful public art and urban design enhancements for a new transit corridor with 11 BRT stations in Silicon Valley. Artistic enhancements may include unique paving patterns, way-finding elements, windscreens, shelter canopy surfaces, feature lighting, and dynamic media experiences.
The scope of work includes two phases: Phase I involves reviewing planning documents, meeting with design and engineering teams, participating in community stakeholder meetings, and developing a comprehensive strategy for art and design enhancements with proposed budgets and schedules. Phase II includes preparing conceptual, schematic, and developed design proposals with renderings, models, and engineered construction documents, as well as presenting designs to VTA staff and the San Jose Arts Commission.
The artist team will participate in community engagement led by SJPA and VTA, including sector focus groups with 10-15 community stakeholders and collaboration with a local artist conducting K-12 outreach. The project budget includes $150,000 for artist design fees and $1,000,000 for fabrication and installation. The design phase contract will likely be executed in December 2012, with research and conceptual development running January-February 2013, strategy report February-March 2013, schematic design April-May 2013, design development June-July 2013, construction documents August-September 2013, and fabrication/installation completion by August 2015. Qualifications and work samples must be submitted by November 11, 2012 at 11:59 p.m. MST. Three finalists will be selected for interviews on December 10, 2012 in San Jose.
