About This Call

The Albuquerque Arts Board and Sandia Science & Technology Park (SS&TP) Art Selection Committee are conducting a national open competition to commission a large-scale, site-specific outdoor artwork for the SS&TP, located near Sandia National Laboratories in Albuquerque. The SS&TP is a 340-acre, master-planned technology community founded in 1998, located south of Central Ave. along Eubank Blvd., adjacent to Kirtland Air Force Base.

The Art Selection Committee seeks to partner artists with scientists and innovators from SS&TP resident companies to develop technology-based public art. Companies working in aerospace, nanotechnology, intelligent mapping, and other specialized areas of scientific innovation have expressed interest in collaborating with artists. Up to five finalist artists will be selected through a Request for Qualification (RFQ) process and will be paired with SS&TP companies. Finalist teams will receive a $10,000 stipend to develop preliminary concept proposals. The selection process will emphasize past projects of similar nature, success of previously undertaken projects with emphasis on collaboration, aesthetic merit, scientific merit, contemporary placemaking awareness, and demonstrable innovation in design and material selection. Finalists will travel to Albuquerque to meet SS&TP partner companies and present their qualifications.

The total project budget is $350,000, with up to $50,000 allocated for design development among up to five finalist teams. The remaining funds, not less than $300,000, are for artwork design, design approval, fabrication, and installation. Not less than 50% of project funds shall be for the artist's portion. Site modification costs will be covered by the City of Albuquerque Public Art Program. The winning artist/company team will begin the project on January 1, 2024, following City Council approval. This call is open to all qualified artists residing in the United States. Applicants should submit 1-10 images of past work.
