About This Call
The Bernalillo County Arts Board and Sandia Mountain Coalition are soliciting preliminary design sketches for a sculpture to be located at WL Jackson Park near the Sandia Mountains. The site is located along Tramway Boulevard at WL Jackson Park (7754-7760 Tramway Blvd and Cedar Hill Rd NE) in the Sandia Heights neighborhood. The park is owned by Bernalillo County, and the proposed artwork should be visible from Tramway Boulevard to motorists, pedestrians, cyclists, and dog-walkers. The site features dramatic views of the Sandia Mountains to the east and expansive views of the city, river, and mesas to the west.
The Arts Board seeks preliminary design sketches from regional artists and anticipates proposals that acknowledge the spirit of the Sandia Mountains and may address the natural surroundings of the site. Craftsmanship and the artist's consideration of existing artwork and surrounding views have been identified as desirable proposal elements. Materials used in the design must withstand freeze/thaw and extreme weather conditions, with a minimum lifespan of 20 years. The artwork should be an appropriate proportion to the site and must not pose a threat to public safety. The established budget for this project is $50,000, with funds sourced from General Obligation Bonds – 1% for Art and $12,000 from the Sandia Mountain Coalition.
Eligibility is open to artists residing in New Mexico, Arizona, Texas, Colorado, and Oklahoma. Submission requirements include an artist's statement (not to exceed 1,000 words), a letter of intent (not to exceed 1,000 words) describing ideas and proposed techniques, up to 3 preliminary design sketches, up to 7 digital images of past work, an annotated image key with full name and numerical listing for each image (including title, media, dimensions, and year of completion), and a current resume including statements regarding artwork and art education.
