About This Call

The City of San Rafael's Parking Division and an anonymous Committee appointed by the Downtown San Rafael Arts District (DSRAD) invite artists to submit digital images of public art for temporary installation at the parking structure entrance located on the corner of Fifth Avenue & C Street in San Rafael.

The selected art pieces will be printed onto 36" wide x 76" tall panels and installed on the lighted sign apparatus in a landscaped planter at the Fifth & C Street public parking facility. Up to six pieces will be chosen for up to three 6-month rotating installations. The goal is to feature artworks from youth artists (age 18 & under) on one side of the sign and artworks from adults (age 18+) on the other side. Artists are encouraged to submit vibrant, colored designs inspired by the local natural beauty, environment, and culture of San Rafael. Accepted techniques include oil & acrylic painting, digital painting or art, watercolor, color drawings, and paper art. Photography and black & white images will not be considered. Artwork depicting nudity, mature content, political statements, copyrighted work, or offensive content will not be considered.

Eligibility: Artists must be living in San Rafael, California. All ages welcome. All work must be original and produced directly by the artist. Entry is free. Selected artists will receive a one-time stipend of $500, with print work and installation costs paid by the City. Applicants may submit up to three pieces of artwork. Artwork must have been completed no earlier than 2015. Applications must include uploaded image files scaled to reflect the 36" x 76" format, and optionally a short statement describing interest in the project and an artist statement. Submissions close September 6, 2019 at 5:00 p.m. PST. Applicants will be notified of results by September 17, 2019. Accepted artists must sign an Artist's Release and Waiver.
