About This Call
The Climate Clock Global Initiative is seeking ideas from artist-led teams to create a major public artwork that will measure changes in greenhouse gas levels and be the first in a series of global projects calling attention to climate change. Climate Clock will be an instrument of long-term measurement collecting data for 100 years, located in downtown San José, California. The artwork will be a collaboration between an artist-led team composed of artists, international and Silicon Valley engineers, and other creative professionals working with climate measurement and data visualization.
This Climate Clock Ideas Competition is the first stage in a three-stage process. In mid-May 2008, a panel of arts and science professionals will review submissions and select six proposals for presentation at The Climate Clock Colloquium (June 9-10, 2008). All submitted proposals will be publicly displayed during ZERO1's 2nd Biennial 01SJ Global Festival of Art on the Edge and on the Internet. During the 08-09 academic year, three finalists will be invited to be "in residence" at FUSE collaboration, the cadre/montalvo artist research residency, with an opportunity to work with San Jose State University students and Silicon Valley research and engineering professionals. Each finalist will receive a $50,000 honorarium during the project residency period. In July 2009, the international panel of jurists will reconvene to review proposals, and the jury will recommend a final proposal to the Climate Clock Global Initiative and the Public Arts Committee of the San Jose Arts Commission on July 15, 2009. In Fall 2009, a design agreement of no less than $1 million will be issued to develop detailed construction documents. The anticipated budget for construction of Climate Clock will be between $5 and $15 million, depending upon the scope of the final proposal.
Applications must be submitted online via CaFE by Friday, May 9, 2008, 11:59 PM, Mountain Daylight Time. There is no application fee. Required materials include: a proposal abstract (maximum 1 page/3000 characters), resumes of all team members (maximum 6 pages per team; teams comprised of a lead artist and no more than five additional key members), 10 images representing no less than 4 previously completed projects with budget information, and 5 images representing the Climate Clock proposal. An image description list of all 15 submitted images is required. Additionally, a PDF image of the Climate Clock idea proposal must be submitted separately. Finalists must be available to attend the colloquium in person or via remote access.
