About This Call
The City of San José is seeking submissions of original two-dimensional artworks from local artists to create a collection of up to 30 artworks for permanent display in the interior of the new Office of Emergency Management (OEM) and Fire Department Training Center (FDTC). The facility will house the OEM, which serves the Santa Clara County region and beyond as a resource for training and preparedness, and the SJFD Training Center, which trains professional firefighters.
Artists are invited to submit images of new or previously created original two-dimensional artwork that is conceptually relevant to emergency preparedness, resilience, and community response. Eligible submissions include drawings, paintings, prints, photography, mixed media, and other two-dimensional art forms. Submitted artworks must be suitable for reproduction as high-quality prints. Selected artworks will be licensed for long-term display, and an image of the artwork and artist's concept statement will be displayed on the City's website. All copyrights remain with the artist.
Thematic considerations include emergency response management, community resilience and spirit during and after emergencies, preparation and recovery from natural and man-made disasters, adaptability to emergencies, and the emergence of heroes and leaders from police, fire, and community members. Artists whose work is selected will receive $5,000 for the reproduction of their artwork. Up to 30 local artists may be selected based on the merits of their art and how well their work aligns with the opportunity's themes. Submissions must include a 300 dpi digital art file (maximum 5MB), artwork title, completion date, and a concept statement of up to 150 words. Submission deadline is October 18, 2023 at 11:59 p.m. PDT via CaFÉ.
