About This Call
The City of San Jose Office of Cultural Affairs is seeking artists for the Art + Technology roster to create projects for the Norman Y. Mineta San José International Airport (SJC) and other technology-oriented public art projects in San Jose. The Art + Technology program showcases innovation, diversity, and change that define San José and Silicon Valley through a collection of permanent and changing technology-related artworks. Artists accepted into the Art + Technology Artist Pool will be considered for multiple opportunities and notified in advance if they are being considered for a project that draws from the artist roster. Artists accepted into the roster will remain there for 3 years, at which time they will be required to reapply.
Art + Technology is defined broadly to include art that uses technology, is inspired by technology, is developed with technology, or comments on technology. Project types include 2 and 3 dimensional art; static and dynamic work; projections; ambient and/or responsive audio work; active textiles or other active surfaces; screen-based work; flat-panel displays or low-profile light boxes. Artists working in interactive media, networked telepresence, social networking, augmented reality, light, LED, video, kinetic, data mining and visualization, web-based interaction, gaming, and robotics are encouraged to apply.
Budget will range up to $150,000 depending on the platform and scale of the project. There is an opportunity to increase the budget through in-kind donations depending on the strength of the partnership with technology partners. Eligibility is open to all U.S. artists and artists who currently hold proper visas allowing them to work in the United States. Applicants must have all necessary permits to work in the United States. Submissions must include 8 digital images representing no more than 5 previously completed projects, up to 2 media files of no more than 25 seconds each, and descriptions of past work including project title, date of completion, location, dimensions, cost, and clear explanations of the project and image.
