About This Call
The Norman Y. Mineta San José International Airport Public Art Program seeks an artist or team to create a long-term suspended artwork installation for the North Concourse food and beverage concession area. The concession area is approximately 8,800 square feet extending both east and west of the concourse travel way. The site has been designed to accept an artwork activated by technology, with access to the dedicated Airport Art VLAN and Airport Art Information Server via a data outlet and a 60-amp circuit in the vicinity of the upper skylight.
The Airport Public Art Program is guided by the Norman Y. Mineta San José International Airport Public Art Master Plan, which creates a strategic framework for a unified program of Art & Technology that showcases Silicon Valley's creativity and diversity. Art & Technology is defined broadly as: art that uses technology, art that is inspired by technology, art that is developed with technology, or art that comments on technology.
The project budget is $345,000 total, consisting of a $45,000 artist design fee (inclusive of construction and engineering documentation) and $300,000 for programming, fabrication, and installation, with a 10% contingency of $30,000. The artist will design to the $300,000 programming, fabrication, and installation budget; any remaining contingency will be shared between the artist and city. The budget includes all expenses related to research, design, fabrication, and installation, including engineering, construction documentation, fabrication, transportation, installation, artist accommodations, insurance, and all other project-related expenses.
The selection process is two-phase. Phase I requires submission of qualifications, a letter of interest (2 pages maximum), a summary of relevant past experience (1 page maximum), a current résumé (3 pages maximum), and 10 images of past work by January 24, 2007. A selection panel will review submissions to select 3 finalists for interviews on February 16, 2007. Phase II consists of final interviews on February 16, 2007, with the city covering travel and reasonable accommodations. Following interviews, one artist will be commissioned. The design phase and fabrication phase will be managed under separate contracts. The schedule includes contract execution in February 2007, schematic design proposal in May 2007, design development proposal in July 2007, and construction documents in October 2007.
