About This Call
The Norman Y. Mineta San José International Airport Public Art Program is seeking an artist to collaborate with the project architect on the design of a new rental car garage (ConRAC) at the airport. The garage will have a prominent location at the eastern boundary of the airport and will be a major part of the airport entry experience from the Guadalupe River Parkway and passing highway. The Airport Public Art Program is guided by the Norman Y. Mineta San José International Airport Public Art Master Plan, which creates a strategic framework for a unified program of Art & Technology that showcases Silicon Valley's creativity and diversity. Art & Technology is defined broadly as art that uses, is inspired by, is developed with, or comments on technology.
The total compensation for artist services is $100,000 to be paid on a milestone basis. The artist will work with the architect to develop conceptual, schematic, and design development proposals for the project identity and character, including proposed materials, lighting, and colors. The artist will review cost estimates to establish feasibility within budget, participate in value engineering efforts, prepare presentation materials, present designs to reviewing bodies, submit design drawings as needed, review final construction drawings, and make visits to San José to inspect construction as needed. Previous experience with large-scale construction projects is desirable.
The selection process is two-phase. Phase I requires submission of qualifications and a letter of interest by January 24, 2007, with a selection panel reviewing materials to select 3 finalists for interviews. Phase II consists of final interviews on February 15, 2007, with the City paying for travel and reasonable accommodations. The Artist Statement of Interest (2 page maximum) must address interest in the project, the Art & Technology Master Plan, themes/concepts to explore, unique perspective and experience, experience collaborating with architects and design professionals, experience with large-scale construction, and schedule/availability. Specific proposals are not requested at this time.
