About This Call
The Norman Y. Mineta San José International Airport seeks artists to create a permanent artwork for its Art + Technology program. The program showcases innovation, diversity, and change through a collection of permanent and changing technology-related artworks. This commission will add a third permanent artwork to the collection, which currently includes "Space Observer" by Bjorn Schelke and "ecloud" by Nik Haafermas, Dan Goods, and Aaron Koblin.
The artwork should be guided by the Airport's Public Art Masterplan, which defines Art + Technology broadly as: art that uses, is inspired by, is developed with, or comments on technology. Acceptable media types include 2 and 3-dimensional art, static and dynamic work, projections, ambient and/or responsive audio work, active textiles, screen-based work, flat-panel displays, interactive media, networked telepresence, social networking, augmented reality, light, LED, video, kinetic work, data mining and visualization, web-based interaction, gaming, and robotics. The commission will be located in Terminal B north concourse, with two site options: the curved concourse wall or Gate 25 seating area.
This is a two-phase selection process. Phase I selects 3 artists or artist teams to develop proposals for the $150,000 base-line budget. Finalists will receive $4,000 for their proposal plus up to $1,000 for travel to San Jose for orientation and final presentation. Proposals should consider scaling options for budgets from $150,000 to $500,000. The project budget includes artist design fee ($25,000), programming, fabrication and installation ($115,000), and 10% contingency ($10,000). Qualifications deadline: October 12, 2017. Finalists will be selected by October 20, 2017, with potential site visits the week of November 6, 2017, and proposal presentations the week of December 4, 2017.
