About This Call
The San Francisco Arts Commission seeks an artist and design professional team to develop a proposal for a veterans memorial in Memorial Court, part of the War Memorial Complex situated between the War Memorial Opera House and the Veterans Building, framed by San Francisco City Hall. The memorial will honor the dedication, commitment and sacrifice of those who have served in the military.
The memorial will be located in Memorial Court and focus on the octagonal area containing consecrated soil from battlefields where Americans have fought. Design criteria include a bronze plaque with didactic information at the entrance, a serene setting for reflection with seating and appropriate lighting, incorporation of a water feature (symbolic of spilt blood), and no elements that restrict views of City Hall from the western end of the court. The project will be designed and constructed as a "green project" to conserve energy and water.
Eligibility: Artist and design professional teams; all members must be practicing professionals residing in the United States, with the artist as lead designer. The design team must include either an architect or landscape architect, both licensed in California with professional liability insurance. A structural engineer may be added after contract award. Applicants must submit 20 images (10 from the artist, 10 from design professionals), resumes for all team members, and a collective statement about the team's work through the CaFE system. Three finalist teams will be selected to develop proposals under contract for $15,000. The implementation budget is estimated at $1.35 million. Finalists will be selected in September 2010, with design proposals due April 15, 2011, public display in May 2011, and panel selection in June 2011. Construction is scheduled to begin in 2012 and be completed October 2013, with formal dedication November 11, 2013.
