About This Call

The San Francisco Arts Commission is seeking to establish a pre-qualified pool of professional artists for consideration for public art projects located at San Francisco International Airport's Terminal 2 remodel. These commissions are open to practicing, professional artists residing in the United States. The remodeled terminal will provide multiple opportunities for artists working in a variety of media, including the glass curtain wall at the entry of the terminal, suspended artworks, and artworks that feature the use of either or both artificial and natural light.

The remodeling and opening of Terminal 2 is a fast track capital project. Artists selected for this project must be available to begin work no later than September 1, 2008. The remodel of Terminal 2 will generate $3.2 million in art enrichment funds. Project budgets are estimated to be between $100,000 and $1 million. The San Francisco Arts Commission will screen applicants to establish a qualified candidate pool to be considered for these commissions. Pre-qualified artists will be presented to an Artist Selection Panel consisting of arts professionals and representatives from the Arts Commission and Airport Commission. The panel may select finalists, who will be paid an honorarium to develop a site proposal and/or attend an interview.

Artist selection will be based on artistic excellence, innovation and originality as evidenced by representations of past work; the artist's work strengthening the existing art collection at SFO; adequate professional experience to meet project demands; availability to participate in design, approval and implementation; assessed ability to meet project deadlines; and results of reference checks. For further information, contact Susan Pontious, Public Art Program Deputy Director at (415) 252-2587 or [email protected], or Ellen Shershow, Public Art Program Associate, at (415) 252-2594.
