About This Call
The San Francisco Arts Commission is establishing a pre-qualified pool of professional artists for public art commissions at the new San Francisco General Hospital acute care building. The project has $5.3 million in art enrichment funds available, with individual project budgets estimated between $100,000 and $800,000. Artists working in a variety of artistic approaches and media are encouraged to apply.
The new nine-story building (with two basement levels) will house 284 patient beds and acute care functions. Art opportunities include a two-story main entry lobby, glass or tile mosaic on the 2nd floor elevator lobby, backlit curved glass walls on patient floors, a glass bridge connector, purchased artwork for admitting and waiting areas, exterior sculpture at the main entry vehicular turnaround, roof garden sculptures, and plaza elements. The project seeks artwork that evokes the beauty and serenity of the natural world through materials, form, light, and imagery, with the goal of contributing to the happiness and well-being of patients, visitors, and staff.
Artists will be evaluated on artistic excellence, innovation, originality, appropriateness to project goals, professional experience, availability for design and implementation, ability to meet deadlines, and references. After the application deadline, the Arts Commission will screen applicants to establish a qualified candidate pool. Selected finalists may receive an honorarium to develop site proposals and/or attend interviews. The Selection Panel will recommend candidates to the Arts Commission for approval. Applicants must submit 10 images.
