About This Call

The San Francisco Bay Area Rapid Transit District is seeking professional visual artists to design and produce commissioned artwork for two transit stations.

WARM SPRINGS STATION: One artist or artist team will be commissioned per site for two primary concepts: (1) Artist-designed glass elements for the concourse curtain wall and/or entry pavilion, with a maximum budget of $984,000; and (2) Surface treatments for entryway columns (ceramic tile, mosaics, stainless steel, or other permanent materials), with a maximum budget of $125,000. The concourse curtain wall measures 6,565 feet at the east elevation and 6,606 feet at the west elevation, with glass panels approximately 4'9.5" x 4'9.5". The plaza-level pavilion has a circumference of approximately 37 feet. There are 12 concrete columns at the station entrance that may receive art treatment.

FREMONT STATION: One artist or artist team will be commissioned to design, fabricate and install a surface treatment for two existing seating areas in the entryway plaza, with a maximum budget of $80,000. Each seating area comprises 8 concrete benches. Recommended materials are ceramic tiles or glass mosaic.

ELIGIBILITY: Open to professional visual artists in the United States. Applicants must demonstrate successful completion of at least two permanent, site-specific projects utilizing the specified materials for each art site. Artists must have experience working cooperatively with multiple professionals, demonstrate aesthetic excellence, and have experience installing commissioned artwork. Applications from architects, landscape architects, or other design professionals will not be considered unless included as part of an artist-led team.

SELECTION PROCESS: Applications will be pre-screened to ensure minimum qualifications are met. A Selection Panel will review applications and rank them according to selection criteria. The three highest-scoring artists or artist teams per art site will be invited to develop conceptual design proposals. Selection criteria include aesthetic quality of past work, demonstrated ability to translate concepts into durable materials compatible with transit design standards, evidence that existing public artworks have maintained quality over time, stated availability to execute work timely and professionally, and demonstrated ability to work successfully within a project design team and public review process.

Work sample requirements: 8-10 images.
