San Francisco Arts Commission: General Hospital Main Entry Drive and Plaza Artwork

The San Francisco Arts Commission seeks professional artists to create artwork for two exterior spaces of the new San Francisco General Hospital Acute Care Unit. Eligibility is open to professional, practicing artists residing in the nine San Francisco Bay Area counties: Alameda, Contra Costa, Marin, Napa, San Francisco, San Mateo, Santa Clara, Solano, and Sonoma.

Two art opportunities are available: 1) Main Entry Drive Turnaround—a large-scale sculpture for a 25' wide by 50' long median at the hospital's main entrance with a $400,000 budget; and 2) Plaza Between the Acute Care Unit and Existing Hospital—human-scale sculptural elements integrated into the plaza design with a $300,000 budget. Both budgets cover design, materials, engineering, fabrication, transportation, installation, lighting, acknowledgment plaque, artist's fee, and insurance. Artwork must be appropriate for a hospital environment, require very little or no maintenance, and be executed in durable materials.

Artists are selected based on artistic excellence, innovation, originality, professional experience, ability to meet project deadlines, and appropriateness to project goals. After the deadline, qualified candidates will be screened and presented to a selection panel. Three finalists and one alternate will be identified for each project opportunity and invited to develop conceptual proposals. Each finalist will receive a $2,500 honorarium for conceptual design development. Applications must be submitted online via CaFÉ at www.callforentry.org. Artist teams are limited to 10 images total.
