About This Call

The Performing Arts Residency Program provides a platform for the development and performance of new work that enriches the airport environment and cultivates the regional performing arts community. This process-oriented residency program is open to contemporary performing arts in all disciplines—dance, music, theater, and cross-disciplinary digital media. San Diego International Airport seeks a resident performing arts group to create, rehearse, and perform original work inspired by or developed in response to the airport setting. Programming may include local, regional or international live music, modern, traditional or ethnic dance, as well as theatrical productions. Established and emerging performing arts groups, organizations, and higher education performing arts departments are encouraged to apply.

The program aims to enhance the airport environment and engage the traveling public with unexpected and participatory encounters with culture, provide opportunities for research, development and production of new work, and offer a unique venue for rehearsals, public workshops and performances. A contract in an amount not to exceed $25,000 will be awarded for a twelve-month residency period. The selected group will be required to conduct at least one rehearsal, public workshop, or performance per month and will work with the airport's Art Program staff to schedule all meetings, activities and engagement exercises necessary for project development.

Eligibility requirements: Applicants must be an established performing arts group or organization with a minimum of three years of performance history, able to demonstrate successful development and realization of original content or performance repertoire, and legally qualified to work in the United States. San Diego-based performing arts groups are strongly encouraged to apply. Submissions will be evaluated based on originality, creativity, and consistency of past work; performance history; experience developing original content for diverse audiences; and experience engaging the public or community in the creative process. Submission requirements include a letter/statement of interest, core team member bios, resume, images and videos of past work, and an annotated image and video list.
