About This Call

The Salt Lake City International Airport is seeking original artwork for Whimsy Walls, a public art initiative featuring vinyl wall wraps in approximately 24 restrooms throughout the new airport terminal, scheduled for completion in 2020. This is a national call open to all U.S. artists, with local Utah and emerging artists encouraged to apply.

Twenty-four commissions are available at $7,000 each across three wall dimensions: Wall A (4 available, 9' High x 38' 6" Wide), Wall B (6 available, 9' High x 16' 8" Wide), and Wall C (14 available, 9' High x 32' Wide). Artists may submit up to 5 unique images for consideration across all wall types. All 2-dimensional art styles are welcome, including abstract, figurative, representational, graphic, conceptual, collage, landscape, print, and photography. Artists may choose to reflect the spirit, culture, landscape, and community of Salt Lake City, though all subject matter will be considered. Artwork must be original and one-of-a-kind, appropriate for diverse viewers, and may not contain promotional, advertising, religious, sexual, violent, or negative imagery, or convey political partisanship. Salt Lake City will acquire all intellectual property rights, and artwork will be attributed to individual artists with a plaque.

Submissions must be received electronically via callforentry.org by March 20, 2018 at 11:59 p.m. MDT and include: a letter of interest (3,000 characters or less) with artist vision and statement, up to 5 to-scale visual images labeled with intended wall type, and a current resume (5,000 characters or less). All submissions must be original, unpublished, and to scale. Selected artists may be present for installation at their own expense. Questions should be directed to Dana Hernandez at [email protected] by March 18 at 5:00 p.m. MDT. Artist selection and notification will occur in April 2018, with contract execution in May 2018 and artwork delivery in July 2018.
