About This Call

This project will improve connectivity for pedestrians and active transportation users (bikes, scooters, rollerblades, mobility devices) across the 400 South Viaduct, an important corridor linking Salt Lake City's East and West sides. Construction includes a new two-way multi-use trail on the south side of the viaduct, changes to sidewalks and pedestrian ramps, striping removal and replacement, installation of a physical barricade between motor vehicle traffic and the trail, and minor construction to relocate medians. The multi-use trail will connect with existing bike lanes on 900 West and a planned grade-separated trail on 300 West.

The commissioned artist or artist-led team will work collaboratively with the SLC Public Art Program, Engineering and Transportation Divisions, and contracted engineering design consultant as an integral part of the viaduct's design team. The primary task is to co-create a viaduct that rewards and celebrates its users by identifying or designing aesthetic elements integrated into the project's overall infrastructure. Potential artwork may include form linear design for concrete, hardscape enhancements such as decorative paving, decorative metal enhancements for railings and fencing, light fixtures and lighting enhancements, interactive artwork, murals/mosaics, and aesthetic enhancements to barriers separating cyclists and pedestrians from vehicle traffic.

The total commission is $53,000, inclusive of all artist fees for design development, community engagement, travel expenses, and other project-related costs. The selected artist or artist-led team will implement a maximum of 3 community-centered sessions to inform the final design. An artist/team outside of Utah is welcomed but not required to engage with Utah's local artist community. The project will be broken into phases with milestone-based payments. Artist qualifications should include successful experience collaborating with design professionals as part of a team and experience developing and implementing community-centered strategies.
