Salon des Refusés

Pyramid Hill Sculpture Park & Museum announces an open call for a new exhibition gallery with the theme "Salon des Refusés." Artists are invited to submit an artwork that was rejected from a past exhibition or project, along with a statement telling the story of the piece: what was it made for and what went wrong? Statements could be inspiring testaments of artistic growth, examples of differing tastes, or comical examples of miscommunication. The jury will consider the artist statement, and the exhibition will present the statements alongside the art in the show. Inspired by the Salon of 1863, when the Paris Salon famously rejected artists including Edouard Manet, Gustave Courbet, Camille Pissarro, and James McNeill Whistler, this exhibition seeks to give art and artists a second chance.

The exhibition is open to all fine art media, including painting, drawing, graphic arts, collage, sculpture, photography, textiles, ceramics, video, and mixed media. Entries must not exceed 72 inches in any direction and/or 150 pounds. No entry that requires the artist to be present for moving or assembly will be accepted. Work that is hung on the wall must be hung using D-rings, wire, or cleats with hardware installed prior to delivery. All work must be original and submitted as high-quality JPGs or PNGs (1-2 images) and/or video (0-1 video), for a total of 1-3 media samples. The non-refundable entry fee is $35, which allows up to 3 entries and funds the awards and series costs.

Accepted artists will be notified on 7/21/2023. Works must be received between 8/7/2023–8/25/2023 during office hours (Monday–Friday 9:00 A.M. to 4:00 P.M.). Installation occurs 8/28/2023–9/1/2023, with an artist reception on 9/9/2023. The gallery runs from 9/2/2023–1/2/2024. All works on the premises will be insured. Juror's Choice and People's Choice Awards will be announced at the closing of the exhibition, with cash prizes awarded to winners. Pyramid Hill takes a 20% commission for all sales of work in the exhibition.
