About This Call

The committee is seeking proposals for a vibrant community mural to enhance downtown Mt. Sterling. The mural will be located on South Capitol Ave, east of the Veterans War Memorial, and should incorporate elements connected to Brown County such as the high school band or mascot (the Hornets), a colorful parade-like scene, farmer's market, county fair scene, or rural lifestyle. While a strictly patriotic mural is not desired, patriotic elements would be appropriate. The mural should serve as a "photo op" for the area and be colorful and eye-catching.

Project specifications: The mural dimensions are approximately 120'W x 20'H on a brick surface that will be tuck-pointed and primed with white paint. The projected budget is not to exceed $15,000 for an artist or team of collaborative artists, and must include all artist fees, supplies, travel-related expenses, and equipment rental. The design must be suitable for public viewing of all ages. Title of ownership will pass to Action Brown County upon completion. The mural must be completed by September 3, 2021, and should be made to last a minimum of 3-5 years with materials chosen for durability.

Submittal materials must be in digital form and emailed to [email protected], with attachments no larger than 15 MB. Submittal materials will not be returned and incomplete applications will not be considered. Selection criteria include attention to context (architectural, historic, geographical, and/or cultural), proven ability to create distinctive site-specific artwork, originality and creativity, quality and craftsmanship, maintainability and durability, appropriateness for a pedestrian site, and feasibility of completing the work on time and on budget.
